Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

What is a Breast Lift?

Gravity causes the breast tissue and skin to stretch resulting in sagging appearing breasts with low positioned nipples. Breast sagging (ptosis) can occur in any woman with age or earlier in life in women with heavy breasts or after pregnancy. A breast lift (mastopexy) is a procedure that lifts the breast, the nipple, and tightens the skin of the breast. Additionally, implants can be used to increase the size of the breasts. In some women with congenital breast asymmetry, a breast lift (mastopexy) be used to improve symmetry.

What should I expect during my consultation?

The highest level of understanding between the patient and surgeon is required for a successful outcome after a breast lift (mastopexy).

During your consultation, you will be asked whether you like the volume of your breasts when you are wearing a bra. If the answer is “yes”, then a breast lift (mastopexy) alone would be indicated. If you find the volume of you breasts (with a bra on) smaller than desired, then a breast augmentation with a breast lift (mastopexy) would be indicated. Your breast size, shape, and skin quality will be carefully evaluated.

We will then have a thorough discussion with you about the different types of breast lifts and together select the procedure that would work best for you. If you also choose to undergo a breast augmentation, we will discuss the risks and benefits of having a simultaneous breast augmentation with a breast lift vs. undergoing the two procedures at different times.

The new position for the nipples and location of proposed incisions will be drawn for you on your photographs.

The duration of a breast lift procedure and postoperative recovery will depend on the type of procedure chosen. We will discuss these with you in detail more than once during your consultations.
