16 Mar Plastic Surgery Procedure Terms: What do they Mean?
More people know about plastic surgery than ever before. Many of the technical plastic surgery terms have become part of a common conversational vocabulary.
Before, many people referred to nose reshaping as a nose job, but today, more people name the procedure by its proper technical term as rhinoplasty. The term rhinoplasty stems from the greek words rhinos which means a nose and plastikos which means to shape or mold. Hence the word plastic surgery refers to shaping or molding. Plastic surgeons will alter the cartilage and bony structures of the nose to modify the shape of the nose.
Abdominoplasty means reshaping of the abdomen, also called a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck involves removing excess skin and fat as well as tightening abdominal muscles.
Augmentation mammaplasty is breast augmentation. The word mammaplasty means breast reshaping. This procedure is also referred to as breast enlargement, breast enhancement, or breast implants. Reduction mammaplasty is breast reduction.
Liposuction is a commonly used term to describe removal of fat. Other technical terms for this procedure are suction lipectomy (removal of fat) or lipoplasty (reshaping of fat).
