01 May Popularity of Plastic Surgery Procedures
There have been some surprising statistics in the past year regarding plastic surgery. Among Latinos in the United States, plastic surgery rates have been increasing. On the other hand, plastic surgery rates among Asian Americans have been declining. This is a reversal of previous findings. Hispanics underwent an estimated 1.5 million procedures last year, up 12 percent from 2008. Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeons were interviewed regarding this trend, and they are not sure of the reason for the increase in procedures for this group. However, they report that the most popular procedures for Latinos are breast augmentations, liposuction and nose jobs. These statistics were compiled through a survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The organization also reported a decrease in Asian American plastic surgery procedures. The number of procedures has decreased 17 percent since 2008. Some surgeons say that it is because Asian American patients, as a whole, are very cautious during the worst of the recession. Three years ago, Asian American patients were turning to plastic surgery at a faster pace than any other group according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Their most popular procedures were nose jobs, eyelid surgery, and breast augmentations. In addition, African Americans reportedly underwent 5 percent more plastic surgeries between 2008 and 2009. Their most popular surgical procedures are liposuction, nose jobs, and breast reductions.
These findings conclude that African Americans and Hispanics have continued the trend of increases in plastic surgery, while Asian Americans have reversed the trend with a decrease in the procedures. It will be very interesting to see what the trends are like as the United States begins to emerge from the recession of the last few years. The trends could completely change as the unemployment rate decreases and people begin to have more money to spend.
