How much time off should one take after plastic surgery?
Most procedures in plastic surgery are elective and require careful preparation and planning. A great part of a successful outcome depends on proper postsurgical care. Recuperation following plastic surgery depends on the type of procedure performed and person’s health status. Postosurgical instructions vary depending on the preference of the plastic surgeon and patient’s health status. At our practice most patients are given instructions listed below.
Breast Augmentation– is a relatively short procedure about (45min – 1hour). Most women are able to return to work about 4-7 days following breast enlargement. The larger the breast implants, the greater amount of pressure the patients experience early after the procedure. Most exercises can be resumed about 4 weeks after breast augmentation.
Breast reduction or Breast lift – are 3-4 hours in duration. Patients are advised plan for a 7 -10 day recuperation period, which can be shorter for many patients. Exercises can be gradually resumed 1 month after surgery.
Rhinoplasty or nose job – takes about 1-2.5 hours to perform. In most patients a nasal splint will be placed following nose surgery, which will stay on for 5-7 days. Although some patients return to work or school, as early as 2-3 days after nose surgery, most patients take about 5-7 days off. Exercises can be resumed 3-4 weeks after rhinoplasty.
Tummy tuck– the surgery lasts 2-4 hours. Some patients may spend a night in the hospital or a recovery center but most patients go home the same day. It is recommended for most patients to take about 2 weeks off. Many people feel better faster and return to work as early as 6-7 days after tummy tuck surgery. Cardiovascular exercises can be resumed 4 weeks after tummy tuck surgery and heavy lifting 2 months after surgery.
Liposuction – the duration of this procedure varies on the size of the patient and number of areas treated. For isolated areas of liposuction (eg lower back, abdomen, outer thighs, neck, or arms), 4-5 days of recovery is sufficient for most patients. When liposuction is combined with other procedures, recovery can be several days longer.
As a rule after all these procedures patient will be walking the same day after surgery.
