Should breast implants be replaced after 10 years?

Women considering breast augmentation may be thinking about just how long their breast implants will last. Implants are man made devices that are not guaranteed to last a lifetime. However, depending on their function and care they may never need to be replaced or removed. Due to the highly specific nature of each breast augmentation procedure, the need for replacement depends on the patient. It is important to maintain regular follow-up visits after your procedure to check on the condition and placement of the implants.

Breast augmentation allows women to achieve improved volume, shape and size of their breasts. The size of the breast implants vary and are available in silicone and saline substances. Upon consultation the patient and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vladimir Grigoryants, will determine which breast implant should be used to achieve the desired results of the patient. He reviews and answers all questions about the procedure during consultation.

Will Breast Implants need to be changed every 10 years?

Many times patients ask if they need to replace their breast implants every 10 years. No, they will not need to be changed if the patient is not experiencing any issues with them.

The overwhelming majority of Dr. Grigoryants’ patients in Los Angeles do not need replacement breast implants. However, some women will need to undergo a second procedure if they decide they want a different size, experience a lifestyle change, or experience trauma or injury to the chest area which causes the implant to rupture.

What Causes the need for Replacement Breast Implants?

Although there is no standard reason to replace breast implants, there are a few reasons why patients may need to remove or replace implants. Surgeons will replace implants for many reasons including lifestyle changes, desire to increase or decrease the size of the implants, or due to a rare complication such as capsular contracture, implant rupture or implant rippling.

Capsular contracture is a condition that forms tough scar tissue around the implant, making it firm and sometimes painful. A person with mild conditions may not feel discomfort, maintain quality appearance and touch of the implants. If the patient is comfortable with this condition there is no need to change or remove them.

Implant ruptures are likely, but they are not harmful as most women believe. If a saline implant ruptures, the implant becomes noticeably deflated. The solution is comprised of a solution that is naturally absorbed by the body and does not cause any harm. Silicone implants are more difficult to detect ruptures, but the gel is thick and designed to stay within the implant casing. It may change shape or feel different, but it will not be harmful to the body.

Implant rippling occurs mostly in saline implants. The saline solution shifts with changes in body position, and rippling is most visible at the top of the breasts.

Average Lifetime of Breast Implants

There is no pre-determined lifetime of implants, but most breast implant manufacturers say that their products will last about 10-15 years, on average. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, implants will not last forever and will likely need to be replaced in another operation. The length of the implant life varies in each patient, but if the implants do not give the patient any problems there is no set time or need to replace old implants.

Some implants may last a lifetime, but others may need to be replaced within five years due to an unforeseen change in lifestyle or injury suffered which causes a complication with the implant. Surgeons say there is no way to predict how long the implants will last, but the best way to determine if they need to be replaced is to visit the surgeon once a year to be sure the implants are intact and not causing problems for the patient as they mature.

Patients considering breast augmentation can expect their implants to last anywhere from 10 to 25 years. Manufacturers give implants an average time of use of 10 years, but if they do not cause any problems there is no need to replace them. Ask Dr. Grigoryants how long his patients have had their implants and see if their implant type matches your ideal results. Discover what breast implants can do to change your body.
